In my first “Go Dynamic!” article I talked about using Dynamic Keyword Insertion With Google Adwords. In specific, how to insert keywords “dynamically” into your text ads.

As a follow-up to this, I’m now going to telling you how to use Google Adwords so that your clickthrough URL dynamic inserts keywords into your landing pages. Lets get right to it!

Using Dynamic Keyword Insertion On Your Landing Page:

The process for this is really quite easy so it won’t need a long explanation. Continuing with my “Train Dog” example from my previous post, here is how your typical ad might look when using Dynamic Keyword insertion.

{KeyWord:How To Train Your Dog}
40,000+ Copies Sold. How to Train
With Immediate Results, Guaranteed!
YourAffiliateSite4.com/{KeyWord:Train-Dog}

In order to using dynamic keyword insertion on your landing page, you will just need to make one change on your Google Adwords text ad. That change is made to your DESTINATION URL.

Let say your Display URL is:
YourAffiliateSite4.com/{KeyWord:Train-Dog}

and your Destination URL is:
YourAffiliateSite4.com/landingpage.php

1. You would change the Destination to:
YourAffiliateSite4.com/landingpage.php?kw={keyword}

This “?kw={keyword}” code passes what ever search keyword was used to enter your landing page.

2. Now on your landing page, simply place “<? echo $_GET['kw'] ?>” wherever you want to keyword to be placed.

You don’t really have to setup an Adwords campaign to test dynamic insertion. Here is an example: http://www.emonetized.com/dynamic.php?kw=Cool Dude

You can change whatever comes after “?kw=” and it will dynamically insert the keywords.

You can also use <? echo $_GET['kw'] ?> to dynamically insert tracking IDs (such as a SID) at the end of you affiliate link. For example in your affiliate link use: LinkToYourAffiliateOffer.com/offer.php&SID=<? echo $_GET['kw'] ?>

You will need to find out what characters are allowed in your SID by the affiliate network (spaces? periods? underscores? numbers? etc…).

In the case that your keyword is “train dog” but your affiliate network does not allow spaces in the SIDS, you may have to create a separate clickthrough url for each keyword in your Adwords account. There is more than one way to do things. Lastly in this tutorial your landing page would need to allow PHP.

To Your Success!

As I continue to experiment with new affiliate PPC campaigns, I’ve been venturing into new techniques I previously had not tried. One of those techniques is using “Dynamic Keyword Insertion” (also known as DKI) with Adwords. DKI allows you to have specific keywords in your advertising campaign displayed automatically within your text ads. Here is how to do it…

Using Dynamic Keyword Insertion Within Your Adwords Text Ads:

In this example, lets say you want to target “Dog Training” keywords.

If you were targeting the keyword “Train Dog” in Google Adwords, you text Ad might look something like this:

How To Train A Dog
40,000+ Copies Sold. Train Dog
With Immediate Results, Guaranteed!
AffiliateOffer123.com

You are probably going to want to expand your campaign from broad keywords to more specific highly targeted keywords as well (such as breeds of dogs).

For example, “Train Beagle” Train Collie” “Train Bulldog”

Instead of setting up a separate Adword’s Adgroup with a different Text Ad for each keyword you can consider using Dynamic Keyword Insertion. In this example, here is how you would do this:

1. Setup Adgroup named “Train Dog”

2. Add keywords (preferably using exact and phrase match).
[Train Beagle]
[Train Collie]
[Train Bulldog]
“Train Beagle”
“Train Collie”
“Train Bulldog”
ect…you would continue this with all dog breed names.

3. Create the Text Ad in the following format:

{KeyWord:How To Train Your Dog}
40,000+ Copies Sold. How to Train
With Immediate Results, Guaranteed!
AffiliateOffer123.com/{KeyWord:Train-Dog}

Now when someone searches for “Train Beagle” your ad will appear like this (automatically!):

Train Beagle
40,000+ Copies Sold. How to Train
With Immediate Results, Guaranteed!
AffiliateOffer123.com/Train+Beagle

How Does It Work?

The syntax for Google AdWords Dynamic Keyword Insertion is {keyword: } but you will also need to add some default text after “KeyWord:” and within brackets.

The text placed after the colon is the default text which is displayed in the case that your keyword phrase is too long to be dynamically inserted into the ad.

The syntax code also allows for automatic capitalization changes:

> If you want to use all lower case use: {keyword:Default Text}
> If you want to use all UPPER CASE use: {KEYWORD:Default Text}
> If you want the First Letter Of Each Word all caps use: {KeyWord:Default Text}
> If you want the First letter of first word caps use: {Keyword:Default Text}
> If you want the FIRST word all caps and everything else lower case use: {KEYword:Default Text}
> If you want the FIRST Word All Caps And The First Letter of other words all upper case use: {KEYWord:Default Text}

In part 2 of “Go Dynamic” I’ll explain how to use Adwords Dynamic Keyword Insertion on your landing page.

To Your Success!

First let me say that in the long run it’s probably better to setup your own landing page when doing PPC affiliate marketing. I’ll get into some of those specific reasons in another post.

There are however times when you might want to do PPC direct linking or cloaking first. I personally have been doing a lot of direct linking lately and have gathered a list of a few good candidates for future PPC landing pages. So why should you do some testing with direct linking or cloaking in the first place?

You save time and possibly some money!

An affiliate offer on the outside might look good but ends up being a really poor performer on the merchant end. Creating landing pages takes time and you don’t want to waste that time on an offer that’s not going to convert well.

By cloaking or direct linking you will have a general idea on if you can send sufficient traffic to the landing page. Is there enough keyword volume?

Maybe you want to just test the waters in PPC to see how much this traffic will likely cost you. Is the commission on the offer high enough for what you might have to pay for the traffic?

Finally, you can get a general idea of the offer’s conversion ratio before setting up a landing page and maybe buying a new domain.

So now that I’ve given you a few reasons on why you might want to consider using cloaked pages with Google Adwords I’m going to tell you HOW to do it.

CLOAKING WITH GOOGLE ADWORDS:

1. Paste the following code into the page you want to use for cloaking:

<html><head><script>window.status = ‘ ‘;</script><meta http-equiv=”Content-Language” content=”en-us”>
<title>—TITLE—</title><meta name=”keywords” content><meta name=”description” content></head><frameset border=”0″ frameborder=”0″ marginleft=”0″ margintop=”0″ marginright=”0″ marginbottom=”0″ rows=”100%,*”><frame src=—URL— scrolling=”auto” frameborder=”no” border=”0″ noresize><frame topmargin=”0″ marginwidth=”0″ scrolling=”no” marginheight=”0″ frameborder=”no” border=”0″ noresize><noframes><body></body></noframes></frameset></html>

2. Change the “—TITLE—” above to something appropriate.

3. Convert the Landing Page URL to Unicode.

To do this, you can visit one of the following websites.

1. tokira.net/unicode or
2. fantomaster.com/fantomasSuite/shadowCoder/fascodersv-e.cgi

Just type in the offers domain such as “http://www.amazon.com” into the field and submit it. It will convert it to a URL that looks like: &#104;&#116;&#116;&#112;&#058;//&#119;&#119;&#119;.&#097;etc…

4. Paste the new Unicode URL into the “—URL—” section of the code above.

5. Upload your NEW CLOAKED PAGE! You are done!

I setup a quick example cloaked page here on eMonetized. Check Out MyBlogLog. Notice how the url in the status bar didn’t change!

Normally when using PPC, the cloaked page would be on a relevant root domain. For example if I wanted to direct link to a software website with my own URL I would use something like AmazingSoftwareNow.com as the Google Adwords display URL (which is also the cloaked domain). The Adwords clickthrough URL would of course still be your affiliate link.

You could also try using a domain with the trademarked keyword in it if you want to be even more risky. For example if the affiliate offer you want to link to is SoftwareDeals.com, see if SoftwareDeal.info is available and cloak that domain.

Now to the big question: Does Adwords really allow you to use cloaking?
The short answer is no, but often times they that don’t catch it at all or at least not right away. Also check the merchant’s program terms. I don’t consider myself an “anything goes” blackhat kind of guy nor do I personally consider this a highly unethical technique. You will have to make your own decision on cloaking. I have not tried much cloaking with PPC lately but in the past it did work.

As many of you know, I’ve been jumping full steam into PPC Marketing lately. See here: Venture into PPC Marketing Update and here: My New Venture into PPC Marketing – 1st Tests. I’ll be providing an update on how my latest campaigns are going at the end of the month.

Well just a couple days ago I received this message in my Google Adwords account in addition to an Adwords Editor error number 17 when trying to upload more keywords.

The keywords in your account are nearing an unmanageable size. We recommend that you reduce the number of keywords within your account. This will ensure that your account includes the most targeted and relevant keywords possible. Use our AdWords Editor to identify poor performing keywords within your account (such as keywords with few or zero impressions) and delete them. Note: Be careful when deleting keywords in campaigns that are only opted in to the content network. Impressions and other statistics aren’t attributed to individual keywords when ads show on content pages, but are attributed to the ad group as a whole. Therefore, keywords in content-only campaigns will always show zero impressions.

My account is currently close to 100,000 keywords. The most common question I see on forums is “How do you manage and create such a large campaign?!”

Well the answer to that is that it’s easy and I need Adwords to let me go longer! Longer in the long-tail.

In fact I have single campaign I’m running that could easily surpass 100,000 keywords if and when Google Adwords raises the keyword limits on my account.

How about an offer with only 5 root keywords that targets all fifty U.S. states (branch keywords) using phrase and exact match in the following format:

[My Offer Florida]
“My Offer Florida”
[Florida My Offer]
“Florida My Offer”

In this example, “My Offer” would be consider the root and “Florida” would be considered the Branch keyword. That’s 50 states times (4 different variations + 5 different root keywords) = 450 Keywords

So that’s not a lot but then lets add the 50 State Initials to each of the 5 roots and we have another 450 Keywords and a campaign with a total of 900 keywords at this point. Keep in mind many of your campaigns might have 20 or more root keywords.

Ok, so at this point you are thinking what’s the big deal and that it’s really not that many keywords right?

Lets add my list of the top 1000 U.S. cities to the equation (with just a single root!) and you are talking about a 4000 keyword list. Add in the Top Cities plus state initial and you have another 4000 keyword list. I think you get my point.

Where it gets really interesting is when I use my list of 16,559 city keywords which I have been unable to complete at the moment.

1 offer with 1 root and 1 branch targeting exact and phrase match in the following format:

[My Offer New York City]
“My Offer New York City”
[New York City My Offer]
“New York City My Offer”

I’ve just created a list of 66,236 keywords.

Back to the Adwords error message, I’ve contacted support and apparently she has escalated this issue to their concerned team. They’re currently investigating the situation.

Meanwhile I guess I’ll have to use one of my other Adwords accounts I have not been using much.

Pay-Per-Click Search Engines, also sometimes known as pay-for-placement or pay-for-ranking search engines, allow an advertiser to make a maximum bid on specific search keywords. This maximum bid is the highest amount you are willing to pay for a clickthrough for a particular search phrase. You are only charged when your ad is clicked and you are not charged for displays unless you are using Site Targeting. You can use these pay-per-click networks to drive traffic to your affiliate website or in some cases, directly to the merchant. Lets get started.

Google Adwords: https://adwords.google.com/select/Login

Google Adwords is the most widely used pay-per-click network which will send the most amount of traffic but also generally requires higher bids for higher placement. Google Adwords ads appear on the Google search engine results page and also appear on their search network partner websites like AOL Search, Ask.com, Netscape.com, Earthlink.com and a few others.

Your keyword-targeted ads will appear alongside to the right of the results on Google search results pages and also optionally on their content network websites. They Adwords ads my also appear as one of the first one to three highlighted listings on the top of the results page.

Google Adwords does not rank ads purely based on your maximum bid, but instead uses something called a “quality score.” Your ads quality score includes performance variables like your ad’s keyword clickthrough rate, your ad’s text relevance, and even the user experience on the landing page or website associated with an ad.

You can point directly to your affiliate links with Google Adwords. However; they will only display one ad per search query for advertisers sharing the same top-level domain in the display URL. You can read more on Google’s affiliate advertising policy HERE.

If you are new to Adwords, this can all sound a little confusing but I suggest creating a free account and then reading through some of the help files to get a better understanding of how Google Adwords works.

Yahoo Search Marketing: http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com

The Yahoo search engine is the most frequently used search engine after Google. The Yahoo Search Marketing Network (formerly known as Overture) works in similar fashion to that of Google Adwords. In the past, your bid amount would determine exactly which position your ad would be placed at. However they have recently upgraded their ad system, called Panama, to use a position model like that of Adwords. Again, your ads position is not based only on bid amount but also based on its clickthrough ratio etc.

At this time, you can optionally link to an advertiser directly with your affiliate link and they don’t have the same one ad per domain policy the Adwords does. In that case you could link directly to an affiliate offer without even needing your own website. This also takes the worry out of making a great landing page. You can let the advertiser do the job of making the sale themselves and you take out the additional step of your website’s visitor having to click over to the advertiser. Landing pages do have there benefits but for testing, direct linking could be the way to go.

Direct linking through your affiliate link does work but I find the most success by using long-tail keywords and linking to the specific product. It also generally works better for higher commission products. By long-tail I mean longer specific keyword phrases. For example instead of bidding for “web hosting” bid for “cheap web hosting in Florida.” The latter keyword will not send as much volume but you will probably be paying a lower bid for a higher position and will also have a higher clickthrough ratio.

With Yahoo Search Marketing you will be spending a minimum of $0.10 per click and often a lot more for higher placement. Therefore, you can quickly end up spending more than you are making if you are not targeting high commission affiliate programs.

I think the easiest way to learn how Yahoo Search Marketing works is through hands-on experience. Just set a small budget to start with and begin experimenting.

Sign Up With Yahoo Search Marketing ($25 in free credit)

MSN Adcenter: https://adcenter.microsoft.com

The MSN search engine is the third most used search engine. Like on Google through Google Adwords or Yahoo through the Yahoo Search Network, you can purchase ads on the MSN search engine through MSN Adcenter.

The MSN Adcenter program will not drive nearly the traffic Google or Yahoo can, but you can often still bid for great keyword positions at a much lower cost-per-click. Like on the Yahoo Search Network, you can optionally use your affiliate link to send traffic directly to the merchant.

Sign Up With MSN Adcenter

Miva (formerly Findwhat): http://www.miva.com

Miva.com is a fairly low traffic pay-per-click network. I recommend experimenting with them only after you have some profitable campaigns up and rolling with Google Adwords, Yahoo Search Marketing, and/or MSN.

You can bid pretty low on some really popular keywords but they, in most cases, are not going to send you a whole lot of traffic. Miva.com advertiser’s ads are placed on their partner websites such as Infospace.com, SearchFeed.com, Miva.com, Search.com, and CNET.com.

Miva.com and more of these lesser used pay-per-click search engines can be useful in the game of pay-per-click arbitrage.

Sign Up with Miva

Additional Pay-Per-Click Affiliate Networks you could experiment with include:

Adbrite: http://www.adbrite.com
EnHance (was ah-ha): http://www.enhance.com (free $25 credit)
7Search: http://7search.com
Kanoodle: http://www.kanoodle.com
GoClick: http://www.goclick.com
Search123: http://www.search123.com (Free $20 with $50 dep.)
SearchFeed: http://www.searchfeed.com
ePilot: http://www.epilot.com
eSpotting(uk): http://www.espotting.com

Have you used in of these second tier Pay-Per-Click Search Networks mentioned above? What were your results?

Did you know that you can get cheap clicks using Google Adwords for as little as .01 per click?

I think I first read about this specific cheap Google Adwords traffic technique about a year ago but I don’t remember the resource. I was reminded about this idea when looking through my Adwords account today. I still have one Adwords Campaign active doing just what I’m going to explain below.

What I’m about to share with you is not some kind of secret, but very few Adwords users are utilizing this technique for cheap clicks via Google Adwords. It’s using Google Adwords Site Targeting but with a twist.

Step 1. Make some banners.

First you will need to make, or have made, some good image ad banners. The most common sizes used on websites are 468×60 and 728 x 90 banners so I would just start with those two.

Other banner sizes Adwords will allow include the 200 x 200 Small Square, 250 x 250 Square, 300 x 250 Inline, 336 x 280 Large Rectangle, 120 x 600 Skyscraper and 160 x 600 Wide Skyscraper.

Step 2. Create a new Google Adwords campaign.

When you begin creating the AdGroup, be sure you create an “image ad” ad instead of the usual “text ad” campaign.

Step 3. Import lots and lots of relevant keyword.

Lastly you will import as many relevant keywords as you can into the new adgroup . The more keywords you can add the better (I’m talking thousands). Also, set your max bid at $.01 to $.03. You can experiment with raising these bids to slightly higher amounts later.

After saving the campaign most of the keywords will probably be marked as inactive for search because the bids are so low. But with this Adwords technique, that does not matter because it’s the Adwords CONTENT network that will deliver your banner and could possibly send you lots and lots of dirt cheap traffic.

If you are the black hat type you could also try sending this traffic to your PPC arbitrage page. I’m not endorsing ppc arbitrage (this has its risks) and don’t do this anymore myself but it was an obvious idea that came to my head.

My specific results with this technique have been somewhat minimal. However, I think this has to do with the banners I am using and that I did not import enough keywords. I have about 1500 keywords in this campaign and I am getting thousands of impressions a month but the actual click-through ratio is low. I think if I increased it to 5 or 10 thousand keywords (which you would need some sort of software to do) and made a more clickable banner this could work fairly well.

If you try this, I’d be curious to hear about your own results!

You can here.

I’ve been reading a lot of blog posts lately about how much money is being made with affiliate marketing and PPC. Obviously people having been making a killing from this approach for a long time. I’ve been using PPC for a long time, but only on a rather small scale except for one campaign. I’ve been spending around $6000 to $10,000 a month on pay-per-click for the past several months. The vast majority of that money goes to one Adwords campaign which yields me anywhere between $1,500 to $4,000 profit each month. Due to increased competition for this set of keywords, profit has been heading down.

I’ve decided to try and learn the ropes on PPC campaigns a bit better and start experimenting with lots of new campaigns.

At the moment, I’m just experimenting with Direct to the merchant PPC (this does not include my active old campaigns) using Google Adwords.

I plan to look through all the offers in the CPA networks list from my Top Affiliate Networks post.

As a very basic summary I’m:

1. Looking for an offer with a decent per lead or sale payout.
2. I then use various keyword research tools to see what kind of traffic the keywords might get starting with the merchant’s name or main product/service they may be offering.
3. Jump over to Google search to see what kind of competition I might be competing with.
4. Setup direct linking Google Adwords campaigns.

In my first round of tests, I chose the OfferWeb.com CPA network. I started with them rather than Azoogle etc. because I figured there might be a little less competition.

Here is how things have gone so far after running this campaign for 2 1/2 days:

That adds up to $453 in revenue in a little over two days.

Here are the Adwords expenses to date:

On Campaign One, I’ve spent $81.50 and had $270 in revenue, for a total profit of 188.50. This was in less than 24 hours! That’s a huge return on investment. Later however, I overlooked the part in their program description that said “no search allowed.” Ouch. So I paused the campaign and hope they won’t notice. That’s to bad because that would have been about a $6,000+ a month in profit offer based on the half a day stats. However, even if I can’t use this offer in PPC, it’s obvious the offer converts very well. If I can build a high ranking website/page in the natural search engines for the keyword, it could make me a lot of money.

On Campaign Four, I’ve spent $18.51 and had $72 in revenue, for a total profit of 53.49. That’s not to bad given a couple days of tests.

On Campaign Five, I’ve spent $73.74 and had $84 in revenue, for a total profit of 10.26. It’s to early to tell if this one is going to be a long term winner or not one at all.

On Campaign Six, I’ve spent $55.80 and had $27 in revenue, for a total loss of 28.80. It does not look like this one is going to do well. I’ve lowered bids on this one to see what happens.

I’ve lost money so far on the other campaigns.

Overall, I’ve spent $256.67 via Adwords for these OfferWeb campaigns and made $453 in revenue for a total profit of $196.33 in a couple of days. However, if you take out the stats for the best performing offer that I should not have been using in PPC, it comes out to $175.17 in PPC expenses and revenue of $183 for a total of profit of $7.83.

That’s not to good, but this is all about testing. I didn’t believe all of the offer would be profitable. The point of this is to find which offer will be and then drop the others. If I just keep campaign four and if things stay on track, that could end up being about $1000 in profit each month! Everything above was setup in just a few hours.

As metioned, I’m starting with Direct Linking PPC but later will be moving on into landing pages etc.

I’m no expert at PPC and I’m just learning the ropes. As I learn, I hope you do to.

About a week ago I started a new round of John Chow site targeted ads.

In case you missed my Being Creative + Google Adwords Site Targeting post, I’ve done this type of advertising before.

John Chow seems to get most of the credit for being first at this although he started his campaign on Darren Rowse’s ProBlogger after my “I Love John Chow” campaign on his website. That’s ok though because I can’t really say for a fact that I was really the “first” with the idea. I doubt I was. Most ideas are not copyright and if you see an idea that works then you should try to replicate their success. It happens in affiliate marketing all the time.

Back on topic, his results where similar to mine. Darren ended up writing a blog post about the John Chow ads. I think at present, Darren decided to block the site-targeted ads for some reason.

My past Adwords Site-Targeted ads on John Chow were for my webmaster forum. This new batch I’ve started are for this eMonetized blog. I plan to begin monetizing this blog shortly with Adsense so that he can Site-Target IM me back.

I did not really do a whole lot of brainstorming to try and come up with something unique but here are the two ads I’ve used so far:

 John Chow, I’m Back
in Black. I hit the Sack. It’s been
too Long. I’m glad to be Back.
eMonetized.com/TimSchroeder-is-Cool

CLICKS: 232
CTR: 1.40%
COST: $33.15

At an overall cost-per-click of about .14, I’d say it’s one of the most successful forms of advertising I’ve done yet for eMonetized.

This ad had an really high initial CTR. If you run the same ad to long the CTR will obviously start to lower. A huge amount of his traffic comes from repeat visitors. The ad copy itself is kind of strange. I had that AC/DC Back in Black song in my head for some reason. I wanted to tell John Chow that I was “back” to advertising on his website. And the eMonetized website is somewhat “black” (hence the “in black”). Thus the song lyrics worked pretty well I guess. The ad above is now paused and I’m running the following new one:

 Hi John Chow. Please,
Please, Please, Please Review Me!
Pretty Please? With Sugar on top?
eMonetized.com/TimSchroeder-is-Cool

CLICKS: 7
CTR: 5.73%

This ad is very new but again, the initial CTR is high. This ad is meant to be humorous but if John is in a good enough mood, maybe, just maybe he might review me or mention this post!

It might be a long shot but maybe I can help convince him…

John Chow,

Please review eMonetized.com for the following reasons:

1. Because I Love You. Your Blog that is.

2. Because I asked nicely and even with “sugar on top.”

3. Because I can’t spell and realized just now that I wrote “sugar” as “surger” in the ad that’s been live a few days. But I DID get your name right.

4. Because you can show the world that even though you are “evil” that you are still not the devil.

5. Because I’ve been a long time advertiser on your John Chow website.

6. Because I’m crazy enough to ask for a free review.

7. Because I’ve given you a backlink (not that you need anymore).

8. Because this post will probably send you several new site-targeted advertisers which equals more money for you.

So what do you think my odds are?

If you are using Google Adwords, but are not experimenting with Adwords Site Targeting feature, you could be missing out on a lot of low cost, quality traffic.

Site targeting lets AdWords advertisers choose individual websites in the Google content network where they’d like their ads to appear. If you want to place your ad on a single international website, you can. If you want to select dozens of sites about basketball or orchids, you can do that, too. Site targeting lets you handpick your audience, big or small.

When you set up a site-targeted campaign, you first name the sites where you’d like to advertise, or just give us a list of words that describe your site. The AdWords matching system does the rest, analyzing your input and creating a list of available content network sites for you to choose from.

…As with all AdWords advertising, you’ll compete for space with other advertisers. If you choose very prominent and popular sites, you’ll need a higher price to win the ad position. The minimum cost-per-thousand (CPM) bid for a site-targeted ad is US$0.25 or the local currency equivalent.

There are many websites that use Google Adsense on their websites which have little or no site-targeted competition.

I first started experimenting with creative site-targeting on a popular blog you may have already been to called John Chow Dot Com. I was looking to gain a little more exposure and for new members to join a popular webmaster forum I own called Webmaster-Talk.com

At the time, there were only a couple other advertisers using site-targeting to place ads on John Chow’s website. So, I thought I would give it a shot!

The trick to a higher CTR is not simply writing the same old boring ads you see everywhere else. Remember that you will pay for site-targeting on a CPM (cost-per 1000 ad impression) basis so visitors can click on your ad as many times as they want and you will not get charged more. You pay for impressions, not clicks.

My site-targeted ads were so original that his readers kept emailing him telling him about them and he ended up blogging about my ads on his website, making the cost of CPM advertising on his website more than worthwhile. You can read about what he posted here (don’t spell their name wrong )

Here is what some of the ads looked like on his website:

I later added a third site-targeted ad that looked something like this:

John Chow + Tim Schroeder

Experiment with the Google Adword’s Site Targeting feature. With a little practice and the right ad copy it can turn out to be a big success!

By the way, I’ll be starting some new site-targeted campaigns for this blog shortly and as always, I’ll let you know how it goes!

Look over the following sample Google Adwords ads and try to figure out what they have in common:

How Do I Earn $230K+ ?
I Sell Other People’s Stuff as an
Affiliate – and Now You Can Too!

You mean I can make $230k as an affiliate?!

I’ll Give You My Tools to Be a Rich
Affiliate, Copy My Secret, So Easy

What a jerk, but I’m wondering just what this website is all about!

I was scammed 17 times
These websites are absolute scams.
I’ll show you the ones that work
URL-Removed.com

Was the product I just searched for on his SCAM list? Are there other products that work better?

(Product Name) Sucks
I was scammed so many times.
Read this before buying…
URL-Removed.com

Does that product really suck and why is he saying it does?

Don’t Buy (Product Name)
Don’t Spend $176 Without Getting My
Free Guide To Making…
URL-Removed.com

The “don’t buy” catches my attention. If I’m going to buy the product I might as well get the free guide he is offering.

The sample Google Adwords ads above use attention getting headlines that prey on the reader’s emotions. I don’t want to get scammed. I don’t want to buy a product that sucks. I like getting free stuff when I buy a product. Are you starting to get why this works?

I am not saying that you would always want to write your pay-per-click (i.e. Adwords) ads in the fashions used above. The headlines above are product dependant.

However, there are other ways to use your creativity. Always experiment with different ads to figure out which get the higher clickthrough ratios.

Test a combination of creative outside-the-box ad copy and I think you will reap the rewards.

Other ways to increase your Google Adwords Clickthrough ratio:

1. Include your target keyword in all three ad lines. This is kind of an obvious tip but if you can include your target keyword in all three ad lines then do so. The more times the keyword is bolded in the ad the more likely it will catch the reader’s eye.

2. Use numerical numbers. People like numbers. Is the product on sale? Use “50% off” in the ad. Do you offer a competive price? Use “Only $24.95″ in the ad.

3. People like awards. You don’t hear many people talk about this one but I’ve found using phrases like “a PC Magazine award winner” in the ad seems to help increase the CTR. Have they won the award multiple times? Use a phrase like “A 5 time PC Mag award winner” in the ad.

4. Use Negative Keywords. If you are not using negative keywords in your Google Adwords campaigns then you are losing money. For example, if you are running an ad for software you might want to add negative keywords such as:

activation, disable, uninstall, remove, removal, key code, code, error, key generator, serial, crack, license, serial code, cracks, cracked, password, key, warez.

5. Bid high and then adjust. Start with a high CPC initially to try and build up a good clickthrough ratio for the ad. Then you might be able to slowly adjust your bids lower and keep your previous position. Be sure to set a maximum daily expedenture.

6. Use Long-Tail-Keywords. Use long-tail-keywords in conjuction with exact match phrases. For example, instead of bidding on “mortgage” bid on a long-tail keyword such as [low cost mortgage in Orlando FL]. I’ll be writing more on using Long-Tail keywords later.

I hope this helps! Take care and good luck.
