I think that the blog theme definitely not. Reason being? It's a wordpress theme that is readily available for download and is in use on several blogs across the Internet. While the active commenting on Derek's site is a sign that custom themes are not a "Must Have" in order for a site to be successful, I feel that it certainly shows an attention to detail that keeps users coming back.
